Beautiful little town

Coffee/beverage cafe along the river in Lansing Iowa. Serving some of the best Signature Gourmet Sandwiches, changing menu options seasonally according to what's locally available. And of course they have some of the best pastries, muffins, scones, etc. to go with your coffee.

Allamakee County hosts 3 towns along the Mississippi river and the Great River Road.

New Albin, home to the famous City Meat Market and boarders the Minnesota State Line.

Lansing, where they're currently building the new bridge, (ferry access across the river is available). Plenty of eating and shopping establishments. The Driftless Area Education/Conservation Center, Mt. Hosmier and of course the river.

Harpers Ferry, home to Effigy Mounds National Monument and Yellow River State Forest, along with several eating establishments.

We also have a couple of wineries in the the county for some wine tasting.

Keithsburg Riverside Campground is fantastic! They have campsites just feet from the Great River. We like to go in the fall when it’s not too crowded as it’s a first come first serve campground. And it reasonable! You can fish right from your campsite, or just watch the sunset over the Old Man River. I highly recommend.

In 2023, I rode my BMW bike down the GRR from Wisconsin to The Big Easy. Along the incredibly beautiful route I stopped in Clarksdale, MS. I stayed a night at the unique Shack Up Inn in Clarksdale. For the uninitiated, Clarksdale is the up and coming Blues Capital of the South. My room overlooked the dance floor and band platform at the Shack Up Inn. The Inn is a one of a kind vintage Inn made up of tin and wood. The town has a number clubs/bars with numerous Blues acts. I can’t wait to head back down the GRR in 2026, which will include a two night stay in Clarksdale and the Shack Up Inn.

New Orleans, overlooking the Mississippi, is the most fun that can be had in one place on the GRR. Something for everyone, from the Insectarium and World War II Museum, to the endless party on Bourbon Street, to the genteel mansions seen while riding the St. Charles Streetcar, and the great music everywhere.
